So this is a technique for killing off a synth sound that I stumbled across while (literally) twiddling knobs. It’s a cool way to end a song.
- Increase the cutoff frequency. This will typically make the sound brighter.
- Gradually increase the resonance. This attenuates the frequency at around the level of the cutoff. If the sound has a long release, it sounds like it’s been dropped down a very deep well.
- When the resonance it at its highest level, snap back the cutoff. This creates the satisfying ‘zap’.
For added coolness, pan from left, over to right as the resonance increases, and back to left when the cutoff snaps back.
